Scripps Research has six Nobel Prize winners, 15 FDA-approved drugs, and more than 1,000 patents.
San Diego – scripps research La Jolla is celebrating a century of transforming human health. This nonprofit biomedical research institute is ranked number one in the world for innovation.
Scripps’ 100 years of life-changing science has helped them save countless lives.
“It started 100 years ago through philanthropy, and it continues that way today,” said Dr. Gabriel Ozorowski, director of the Senior Institute.
Operations Manager Hannah Turner added: “Our lab works on a variety of projects.”
Scripps Research has six Nobel Prize winners, 15 FDA-approved drugs, and more than 1,000 patents. Some of the world’s brightest minds are here.
“We are primarily focused on vaccine development for HIV, influenza and malaria,” Turner said.
“This is a small step in science, but this is a global team effort, and it feels great to know that I’m contributing to a team effort,” Dr. Ozorowski said.
These two top scientists very humbly invited CBS 8 into their lab.
“Ten years ago it took a week to collect data and three months to get a high-resolution structure; now it takes less than an hour to go from collection to high-resolution structure. Data is growing exponentially,” Turner said.
Scripps, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, has researched everything from cancer research to heart disease to arthritis and helped develop vaccines against infectious diseases.
“One of the things I’m really proud of is that we’ve been working on coronavirus even before the pandemic hit, and we’ve developed small tweaks to make proteins more stable, and those small tweaks have made all the difference. That’s reflected in the vaccine.’It’s great to be able to be a direct part of something like that,” Turner said.
One hundred years ago, Ellen Browning Scripps shared the same great goal. The philanthropist and journalist was interested in diabetes, and after the discovery of insulin he founded an institute in 1924 to investigate how science could change medicine.
“The research they are conducting provides the foundation for creating treatments for some of the most devastating diseases, such as cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. At Scripps, we have you covered.” Science Communications Department said Lauren Fish, senior manager at. and a marketing representative at Scripps Research.
Remaining a nonprofit organization allows Scripps to conduct more curiosity-driven research. Most of their funding comes from the National Institutes of Health, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and other generous donors.
“Donations are always welcome. We’ll take it and use it to do good,” Turner said.
As we enter a new millennium, Scripps Research says we will continue to pursue bold, innovative ideas that advance human health and ultimately save lives.
Scripps Research also accepts high school interns. and training the next generation of top scientists. Consistently ranked among the top 10 programs in chemical and biological sciences.
