JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – In April, Science Hill High School (SHHS) students participated in a reading challenge to see how many minutes they could accumulate that month. Even now that we’re in May, I’m still turning the pages.
In April, students finished the month with 130,666 minutes of reading, exceeding the goal of 20,000 minutes set by SHHS Library Media Specialist Ann Timbs.
“It’s really great to see the excitement about reading,” Timbs said. “While some students are very excited about this challenge and have come to the library, some students are not in the habit of stopping by the library. The students were enthusiastic about winning prizes. Prizes I am truly grateful to the Science Hill PTA for providing this.”
SHHS 4th graders read the most, followed by 2nd, 1st, and 3rd graders. Kayleigh Stocton, Elena Pieski, and Rylei Foster were the top three readers of the entire contest and were awarded gift cards.
“Reading is beneficial to anything you do,” Tims says. “It’s great to see students fall in love with reading because the more they read, the more they learn.”
Timbs said some students may compete in the Toppers Reading Cup next year.
