SAN DIEGO — COVID-19 cases are on the rise this summer, and San Diego County is no exception. Although the number of hospitalizations is still considered low, it is steadily increasing.new data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Hospitalizations show a nationwide increase since early July after falling steadily for months.
A San Diego-based expert said hospitalizations were on the rise.
“It’s a small increase,” said Dr. Abissola Orlado, a family medicine specialist at Sharp Reese Steely. There are many,” he said.
Dr Olrade said the number of cases usually rises during the summer.
“People are congregating, travelers are showing up in record numbers, and of course transport hubs will be crowded, and the number of infected people will increase. I go to see shows, I go to concerts, and I do it without a mask,” said Dr. Olrade.
Another factor, he said, is that Omicron variants continue to evolve, making it easier to spread.
Nationally, a new subvariant of Omicron called Eris (EG.5) is now the dominant strain. Experts said Ellis hasn’t landed in San Diego County yet, but they expect Ellis to arrive as the number of cases rises.
Sewage remains a useful tool in determining the spread of COVID-19, as states no longer have to report positive cases after the public health emergency ended in May.
Dr Olrade said the new subvariant could cause more severe cases, but the vaccine would still protect people.
The FDA has cleared a new shot, but it is not yet available. Dr. Olrade said there is no need to wait for the latest vaccine.
“The best COVID-19 vaccine is the one available to you,” she added.
If you have not yet received the COVID-19 vaccine or booster, you should make an appointment immediately. The latest FDA-approved vaccine is expected to be available around mid-to-late September. Those who need extra protection or want to reduce the chances of spreading the virus can order her N95 masks at Amazon. Prices range from $10 to $25.
