With Europe’s biggest war approaching its one-year anniversary, it’s clear to everyone that President Biden and his security team have failed the ongoing Ukraine plan.
The general idea of the White House and the Pentagon revolves around giving Ukraine a “suitable kit.” First Stinger and Javelin, then he’s HIMAR, Patriots, Bradley, and now Abrams tanks.
Is this endless stream of high-tech military hardware that is supposed to make Vladimir Putin surrender? Here are three reasons why everyone is at risk.
1. Lack of strategy
President Biden clearly understands the risks of becoming increasingly involved in what promises to be a war he can’t win. “When America and Russia start firing at each other, it’s a world war,” Biden said, explaining why he would not deploy US troops to Ukraine.
Putin’s Pivot in Ukraine Causes Permanent War in Europe
Biden also showed a firm grasp of the dangers of arming Ukrainians outright when he called out the possibility of Armageddon in a speech to the Democratic Senate Election Committee in October.
Yet what seemed off-limits just a few weeks ago is now heading to Kyiv. A day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy promoted “big business” opportunities for U.S. and international investment firms at a National Capitol Association meeting in Boca Raton, Fla., Biden was on his 31st. announced the delivery of Abrams tanks.
After Zelensky got the tanks, he now wants F-16 fighter jets, which the president has so far denied.
What is driving Biden’s risky behavior? Is it another sign of his possibly declining mental health? Certainly the concern is great.
Last July, 54 House Republicans signed a letter to the president asking Mr. Biden to take a cognitive test.
Mrs. Jill Biden is struggling to “protect” her husband from harassing journalists about the improper handling of confidential documents, trying to shield him from mounting pressure.
Is it because Biden failed to stand up to foreign leaders?
The unexpected decision regarding Abrams tanks comes after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz refused to send the Leopards to Ukraine until Washington supplied its own tanks. Is this another example of this administration’s gross lack of strategy?
Regardless of the driving factor, Biden appears to be in a precarious position. Especially at this critical time when the conflict in Ukraine is likely to escalate into a wider war in Europe, and the United States is very likely to get caught up in it as well.
2. You don’t understand the enemy’s mindset and modern warfare
The Biden team naively rationalizes that the Abrams tank will be better than the Russian main battle tank, the T-90 (an upgrade from the T-72), and therefore will change the battlefield dynamics. Indeed, Abrams is an elaborate armor woven with the latest technology. But Putin is no fool. Russia is not fighting symmetrically.
The WWII Battle of Kursk, where 3,000 German tanks collided with Soviet armored vehicles, would hardly double that number. After eight days of “slogging matches,” in what one military historian called “suicidal valor,” the Russians got close enough to throw mines under tanks and smashed German tanks from above. Won by attacking with aircraft. Consistent with the Russian fighting style, the Soviet army sacrificed the German army. The Russians lost 3,800 of her tanks and the Germans 760 of his.
What the Pentagon seems to forget is that the enemy has the vote. Even the Taliban and militants have found ways to circumvent US high-tech dominance and bring the Biden administration to its knees in Afghanistan. But it wasn’t until the loss of US lives and treasures brought reality to the tactically brilliant but strategically inept Pentagon executives who pursued an unattainable mission for two decades. The fact that US tanks are vulnerable to improvised explosive devices (IEDs) came as a great surprise to our “planners.”

In response to U.S. promises to deliver tanks to Ukraine, a Russian company on Monday announced a bounty program aimed at encouraging the Russian military to be creative in neutralizing the Western tank threat. It offered $72,000 in cash for the first Russian soldier to destroy or capture American- and Western-made tanks, and $7,200 for subsequent attacks. While Washington is upgrading his M1 to make tanks more survivable, Russia is monitoring every move of its top-tier perceived adversary and working on countermeasures and counter-tactics. There is no doubt that there is.
Putin sees the war in Ukraine as a Cuban missile crisis. Any chance of Ukraine joining NATO would bring the alliance even closer to Russia’s borders. Moscow is doing everything possible to minimize this risk, which it considers unacceptable. It would be foolish for the Pentagon to assume that the Abrams tank would be a game-changer in warfare and bring peace to Ukraine.
4. Downsizing U.S. combat readiness as China threat looms
The steady outflow of US weapons incorporating classified technology poses a significant risk to US security. For example, Abrams’ latest model contains a lot of sensitive data related to upgrades for survivability purposes.
For this reason, all Abrams sold to foreign customers and even allies are stripped of depleted uranium armor intended to reduce their vulnerability, according to specialized military website Breaking Defense. Officially, what has become an unrestricted supply of top-of-the-line supplies to Ukraine, which is not even an ally of the United States, increases the risk of these secrets falling into enemy hands.

A recent study by a Washington think tank found that the replacement timeframe for major weapons systems ranges from 5 to 18 years. 155 mm ammo, javelin and stinger are in the red. It will take 18 years to close the Stinger inventory gap.
The Wall Street Journal recently accused the U.S. defense industry of being unprepared for a conflict in China. Washington’s erratic behavior during the all-important Russo-Ukrainian conflict has exposed a lack of planning and strategy within the Biden administration. And it’s reckless.
