A passenger on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship went missing Tuesday night after going overboard during a trip from Australia to Hawaii.
The cruise company and reports said the passenger was from Australia and jumped into the water while the Quantum of the Seas was en route to Honolulu.
In a statement to multiple publications, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said, “During the transpacific voyage, a guest aboard the Quantum of the Seas went overboard. “The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation and is working closely with local authorities.”
The ship left Brisbane on April 12 and was scheduled to arrive in Honolulu port on the Friday before the passengers went missing.
The US Navy and Coast Guard have been called in to assist with the search and rescue mission for Australian citizens.
Coast Guard Spokesperson told CBS News Their crew searched for the missing man five times over a period of about six hours, but he was never found.
A spokesperson said the call was received around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
A man whose family was on board told him that the missing passenger’s partner had died shortly before going overboard.
