One passenger died and four were injured when “rough seas” hit the cruise ship during a storm earlier this week.
Passengers were on an Antarctic cruise late Tuesday night when the Viking Polaris was caught in a storm en route to Ushuaia, Argentina.
The storm created huge waves that broke several pieces of glass on the cruise ship and these fell on the American woman, killing her.
Viking cruises confirmed in statement The US National Oceanographic Service said on Saturday that the ship was hit by “rough seas,” a type of wave described as “more than twice as large as the surrounding waves.”
Viking Cruises said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of our guest following the incident.
The passenger’s name and nationality have not been disclosed.
However, Argentina’s state news agency Teram said the dead passenger was an American woman who was “hit from a glass surface that collapsed during a storm”.
“Four other guests suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the incident and were treated by onboard doctors and medical staff,” Viking said.
The cruise company is investigating and has canceled the upcoming Viking Polaris trip scheduled for December 5-17.
Viking Cruises said the boat arrived in Argentina on Wednesday and suffered “limited damage” during the incident.
The National Ocean Service describes rogue waves as “highly unpredictable,” saying they often come unexpectedly from directions other than prevailing winds and waves.
