RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond City Council has approved a plan to fund the Richmond Flying Squirrels’ new ballpark and long-awaited Diamond District project.
Richmond City Council on Wednesday approves a plan authorizing the issuance of “special revenue bonds” to pay for the design, acquisition, construction and equipment of a new baseball stadium and “certain public infrastructure” related to the Diamond District development. Voted.
Richmond resident Elizabeth Greenfield expressed her excitement for the project to move forward.
“I think we can agree with all the comments about the jobs it will bring,” Greenfield said. “This is a significant economic development opportunity for the city, and I am most proud of and grateful for the city’s commitment to prioritizing affordable housing as part of this project.”
The project includes a new stadium for the Squirrels and the redevelopment of much of the Scotts Addition area. The city said it will not affect its ability to finance other projects, such as rebuilding Fox Elementary School and building Richmond High School of the Arts.
City Councilor Andreas Addison believes this decision will be a home run for everyone.
“We’re not making a one-time decision,” Addison said. “It’s not on an island on its own, it’s part of a whole new region, and I think it’s a great way to really invest in our future city.”
Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney said the stadium will be ready for the 2026 Minor League Baseball season.
“Baseball is ingrained in Richmond,” Stoney said. “Richmonders have made it clear for years that they want a state-of-the-art stadium for the Flying Squirrels and a vibrant new neighborhood for all Richmonders to enjoy.”
