As a child on a holiday in the Lake District, I remember learning to count to ten in the old Cambrian dialect. The same rhythmic numbers that the shepherd used to tally herds over generations. “Yan, Tan, Tethera” is the “1, 2, 3” in the traditional sheep counting system.Yang“A fitting name for a place where you’re aiming to become ‘one’.

welcome
Prior to arrival, a personalized door code was sent via email during your stay. This gave independent access to the residents’ lounge through a small porch and to the rooms beyond. As things turned out, upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by Lauren. Lauren guided us through the process and showed us in our room. Check-in felt much more relaxed than a traditional hotel, quickly setting a relaxed and comfortable tone and defining the rest of the stay.

room
We stayed in Room 3 (Lion and Lamb), categorized as a deluxe super key king room, named after the distinctive rock formations above the rocky mountains at the rudder visible through the window.

Each Yang room has a name inspired by the local Fels, from Dunmile to Fairfield, and the decorations combine low-key luxury with a luxurious bedding, a deep, peaceful colour palette, and a thoughtful touch that feels like a true hideaway after a day’s exploration.

Bathroom
The compact yet well equipped bathroom had a sophisticated shower, basin, WC and heated towel rails, all clean and clean.

It is supplied with pure lake toiletries with fresh, natural fragrances. Geranium and Iran – Iranian shampoo is a snack, but grapefruit and lemongrass shower gel, hand wash, hand and body lotion provide an uplifting skin one day before fel.

facility
Beyond the room, Yang is a peaceful space with residents’ lounges, books, games and reading materials, perfect for blowing wind after a walk.

But the real star of the show is the Bistro, the multiple-time winner of the Casual Dining Venue of the Year Award at the Cumbria Food Awards, and has been featured multiple times at the 100 best local restaurants in Good Food Guide.

During our stay we dul into a variety of dishes topped with butter curry sauce and glassmere hardwick lamb kebabs, from mini yannan topped with butter curry sauce and glassmere hardwick lamb kebabs to a cheesy bean tart with pief pastries that accepted Yang’s own baked beans, Gruère, keme kemeji from Shaden, and kemede from hedlekemi.

For the main, Jamaican Yang serves bold and flavorful Jamaican curry with cauliflower, peas, red chili peppers and crayfish, all topped with jerk season korey and spoonful of lime and coriander cream fresh.

Then, of course, there is their now-famous shepherd pie, featuring slow-grown glassmere flock lambs, cheesy mash, hardened ham and parsley garden peas.

Britt Yang (two services) is also a snack. Stewed local beef feather steak with truffles and cheddar mash is served along with creamy cauliflower cheese.

And to finish off, there’s everything from the classic Lakeland dessert of sticky toffee puddings to the choux pans filled with marsala mascarpone cream and carbetti coffee gelato, to the chows pans finished in rich chocolate sauce.

For those looking for alternative accommodation, there is also a Broadrain Cottage and Grasmere glamping on the premises.
place
If you are looking for a base in the Central Lake District, you will find it harder to find better. Grasmere is home to the world-famous Grasmere Gingerbread, and of course William Wordsworth himself explained the village “The most beautiful place a man has ever found‘.

During our stay we took a walk through the white moss, but there are plenty of options: from Wainwright Crimes to the calm rumble with breathtaking views.

For those looking to explore even more, Keswick is just a 20-minute drive away, and you can find historic gems like Castle Leg Stone Circle and lakeside favourites such as Friar’s rocky mountains.

Other nice touches
Yang goes up with a thoughtful little extravagance. In our room, a kettle and tea and coffee supply awaited us, along with sticky toffee bites and a flask of fresh water.

The custom-made weapons survey map in the center of Yang is complete with compasses perfect for brave days.

Dog owners also appreciate the extra care they took to their four-legged guests, provided with biscuits, water bowls and mats. Dogs are also welcome in bistros, making sure you don’t miss out on the fun. And for those planning a long day at fells, you can pre-order a packed lunch.

cost
Out-of-season rates start from around £300 per night (hotel, dinner, bed and breakfast) to £450 per night for staying in a deluxe super king room like we stayed in.

The best bit
Yes, the setting is beautiful. And yes, the food is fantastic. But what really sets Yang apart is the relaxed, unclogged vibe. It balances high-end comfort with relaxed charm. It’s a place where you can return from a long hike, kick your boots, enjoy pints and feel right at home.

Final Verdict
Yan from Broadrayne is a master class in boutique hospitality. This is a family-owned haven that seamlessly blends the traditional heritage of 16th-century Lakeland Barne with modern comforts. Whether you’re here for hills, food, or just restorative peace and tranquility, Yang delivers in every way. If you’re looking for a place to celebrate the Lake District spirit with ease, look no further.
