Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson caused an uproar at Monday’s House Judiciary Committee hearing after denouncing the families of crime victims in New York City as “maga Broadway props.”
The hearing in New York City, dubbed “Victims of Violent Crime in Manhattan,” took aim at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and what Republicans call “pro-crime” and “anti-victim” policies.
Bragg’s office and other political allies, who are now indicting former President Donald Trump for falsifying business records, have denounced the hearing as a political stunt.
At the hearing, Johnson criticized House Republicans for being “phony” and focusing on Bragg instead of passing “common sense gun laws.”

“If my colleagues across the aisle really cared about reducing violent crime, they would work together to pass common sense gun laws,” he said. That’s why I’m working with fellow Democrats to co-sponsor a bill that bans assault weapons, strengthens background checks, and funds research to prevent gun violence. bottom.”
“Meanwhile, MAGA Republicans continue to resist even the most basic reforms such as universal background checks,” he continued. Instead, like the Jackboot thugs, they landed in New York City on the pretext of violent crime.”
“The MAGA Republican extremists have no interest in gun violence or even knife violence,” he added. “Republican witnesses who spent time criticizing District Attorney Bragg served as props in the MAGA Broadway production.”
The room erupted over Johnson’s comments, with one witness yelling, “Don’t talk to us witnesses.”
“You work for us. We don’t work for you!” Madeline Blame, chair of the Victims’ Rights Reform Council, told the commission.
Other witnesses called by Republicans include Jennifer Harrison, founder of Victims Rights NY, Paul DiGiacomo, president of the New York City Detective Foundation Association, and executive director of The New Yorkers Against Gun Violence. It included Rebecca Fisher.
