Netflix has officially completed scripts for Skull Island season 2. Based on Legendary’s Monsterverse, Skull Island premiered a few months before Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The animated story is set in the 1990s and follows a group of teenage heroes fighting for survival on King Kong’s island. Season 1 sees King Kong save humanity while battling the giant Kraken.
Although Skull Island ended on a confusing note, leaving the characters’ stories unresolved, the show has yet to be greenlit for a second season. Brian Duffield, the show’s executive producer, announced some big news regarding the show’s production. Duffield has reportedly finished writing the script and made the announcement on his Twitter account. He is optimistic about the development, despite his lack of confidence in the show’s greenlighting.
About Skull Island
American animator Brian Duffield created the animated adventure series Skull Island. Streaming Netflix’s service. It is the first television series in the MonsterVerse series and the fifth overall, following Kong: Skull Island (2017).
Featuring the voices of Nicholas Cantu, Mae Whitman, Darren Barnett, Benjamin Bratt and Betty Gilpin, the shipwrecked group finds themselves on 1990s Skull Island, where they encounter giant prehistoric creatures, including King Kong, who claims to be the island’s protector. The series is produced by Powerhouse Animation, JP and Legendary Television, and animated by Korean studio Mir. Duffield and Jacob Robinson serve as showrunners.
The MonsterVerse is Legendary’s elaborate network of interconnected worlds populated by primordial monsters known as Titans. To date, the four live-action films that make up the franchise have seen the two ruling titans, Godzilla and Kong, defending humanity from various dangers and sometimes battling each other. With Godzilla vs. Kong and Kong: Skull Island focusing so far on Kong’s voyages, some may be wondering where the animated series fits in.
The first Kong Monsterverse movie was set in the 1970s and saw Conrad and company visit Skull Island and encounter all sorts of monsters on the island, plus Kong’s main enemy, the Skullcrawlers, who faced off against Godzilla in the modern world, long after we last encountered him.
Considering how much Kong has grown in the intervening years, and how the animated series portrayed Kong in his original form while also introducing new dangers like the Skullcrawlers, it’s fair to assume that the events of this series take place immediately after Kong: Skull Island. This would explain how Kong ended up captured on Skull Island by humans, an issue that was barely addressed in subsequent films.
