I received an email from a reader asking if it would be wise to hit the “unsubscribe” button in your inbox. Like many things in the tech industry, it depends. In some cases, responding to spammers can make your email a hot commodity, leading to more spam or being placed on “for sale” lists.
Here you will learn more about how to stop receiving unwanted emails without exposing yourself to spam.

If it’s a reputable company, clicking “unsubscribe” should do the trick. If you’re receiving newsletters or promotional emails from brands you know, they’re usually subject to email marketing regulations.

What if it’s unsolicited spam from an unknown sender? Clicking “unsubscribe” could actually make things worse. You may accidentally verify that your email address is valid, leading to further spam.
“Kim, how do I know what to choose?”
Stick to what you’re familiar with: If the email comes from a source you trust (like a brand you’ve shopped with or a newsletter you signed up for), hit the unsubscribe button.
Avoid the unknown: If it’s a random email about a long-lost prince or a miracle cure, avoid the unsubscribe link. Mark the email as spam in your email client.
