Listeria It spreads easily on deli equipment, surfaces, hands and food, and refrigeration does not kill it. ListeriaHowever, any bacteria that may be on these meats will be killed if they are reheated at a high enough temperature before eating. The CDC recommends not eating recalled deli meat products, as it always does for pregnant women, people over 65, or people with weakened immune systems., Avoid deli meats or cook them before eating.
Number of people who became sick: 57 people infected with outbreak strain Listeria Eighteen states have reported the cases, including one in Arizona, three in Florida, two in Georgia, one in Illinois, one in Indiana, eight in Maryland, three in Massachusetts, one in Minnesota, three in Missouri, five in New Jersey, one in New Mexico, 17 in New York, one in North Carolina, two in Pennsylvania, two in South Carolina, one in Tennessee, four in Virginia and one in Wisconsin.
Hospitalizations and deaths: Of the 57 cases with available information, all 57 have been hospitalized. One patient became ill while pregnant and continued to be pregnant after recovering. Nine deaths have been reported in Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia, and as of this update, one in Florida, one in Tennessee, one in New Mexico, one in New York, and two in South Carolina.
Product Recall: Boar’s Head Provisions Co., Inc., Jarratt, Virginia July 26, 2024: Recall of potentially contaminated deli meat products Listeria monocytogenesThe facility is recalling approximately 7 million additional pounds of prepared meat and poultry products. This expansion includes 71 products manufactured under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names between May 10, 2024 and July 29, 2024. These items include meats intended to be sliced in retail delis and some packaged meat and poultry products sold in retail stores. The “sell by” dates for these products are between July 29, 2024 and October 17, 2024. See the full product list.
