A butcher died while trying to slaughter a pig in Hong Kong on Friday, city police said.
A 61-year-old butcher working at a Shengshui slaughterhouse in the city’s northern outskirts near the border with mainland China was knocked to the ground by a struggling pig, leaving a 40-centimeter (15-inch) wound in its flesh. owed, police told CNN.
The butcher was about to kill the pig, police said, but shot the pig with an electric stun gun, causing it to regain consciousness and knock it down.
Police said a colleague found the man unconscious with a knife in his hand and a wound on his left leg. He was taken to hospital and later pronounced dead.
Police officials said the cause of death has not yet been determined.
The city’s labor department said it had launched an investigation.
“The Department of Labor mourns the loss of this man and expresses our deepest condolences to his family,” the statement said.
“We will complete the investigation as soon as possible in order to identify the cause of the accident, confirm the responsibility of the obligor, and propose remedial measures. If the labor safety law is violated, we will take measures according to the law,” it said. .
The city’s Department of Food and Environmental Health, which manages the livestock slaughterhouse, issued a statement expressing condolences to the man’s family.
