Peoria, IL (WMBD) — A call to action in East Bluff, Peoria. Dozens of people said they were in danger of being evicted for no reason and were given just a month’s notice.
Peoria East Bluff resident Rachel Washington is a mother of four. She was one of dozens of tenants who recently received eviction notices from Texas-based property management firm Darwin Homes, who told her she must move out by the New Year. was given.
“Five days after Christmas, four kids, no funds now, and rent skyrocketing,” Washington said.
At a Peoria city council meeting on Tuesday, Washington, along with other residents and advocates, urged city leaders to help those facing sudden evictions.
“Give us 30 days, 60 days, 90 days and help these people who are being displaced through no fault of their own,” said East Bluff resident Lawrence Maushard. I was.
Third Ward Council member Tim Riggenbach said Darwin Homes’ issuing notices to monthly renters may not be illegal, but it wouldn’t make the situation any better.
“Just because it’s within their rights doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. That’s the part where a lot of us really get heartburn,” Riggenbach said.
He said city leaders have begun looking for ways to ease the burden on those affected.
“Our community development director, Joe Durin, has already reached out to the property owner and asked for an extension,” Riggenbach said. ”
Riggenbach added that city leaders are having preliminary discussions about holding meetings with stakeholders so tenants can find out what their rights are.
