The U.S. organic market (including food and non-food products) was valued at $69.7 billion in sales in 2023, up 3.4%. Organic Trade Association ReportOrganic food sales reached $63.8 billion last year.
For both organic and non-organic foods, pricing was the main driver of dollar sales growth in 2023. However, the price gap between organic and conventional products is narrowing as many non-organic items have experienced steeper price increases than their organic counterparts.
Organic produce continues to lead the market, accounting for 29.4% of organic sales. The category grew 2.6% in 2023 to $20.5 billion, accounting for more than 15% of total U.S. fruit and vegetable sales. Avocados, berries, apples, carrots and packaged salads were the top-selling organic produce items.
Other categories expected to grow in 2023 include:
- Organic grocery sales, a new category that includes breads, grains, condiments and packaged and prepared foods, accounted for 22.1% of organic sales. The sector grew 4.1% last year, totaling $15.4 billion.
- Organic beverage sales increased 3.9% to $9.4 billion.
- Total organic dairy and egg sales reached $8.2 billion, up 5.5 percent.
“Given that organic is already considered a luxury item in the face of inflation, the current growth shows that consumers are continuing to choose organic even amid economic challenges and rising prices,” said Tom Chapman, co-CEO of the Organic Trade Association.
