Larry Ellison is oraclehas been fighting against microsoft We have over 30 years of experience in database software. We also had to deal with clients looking to connect Oracle and Microsoft products. But until this week, he had never visited Microsoft’s headquarters outside Seattle.
He appeared alongside Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who was in town to announce expanded cooperation between the two companies. Oracle is placing its Exadata hardware, including servers for databases and storage, in data centers that Microsoft uses to run its Azure public cloud service for hosting applications.
Organizations can now use Azure to store data with Oracle’s database software without having to install Oracle hardware in their own data centers or use Oracle’s public cloud. Placing Oracle equipment in Azure datacenters allows applications to quickly access data in the database.
“I’m really happy to be here,” Ellison said. virtual presentation in announcementhe teased during Oracle’s earnings call with analysts on Monday. “This is actually my first time coming to Redmond. I can’t believe it. I waited until pretty late in my career to do this trip.”
Nadella brought up memories of his early days, before managing teams that built Azure, the Bing search engine, and Dynamics sales software, to convey the importance of Microsoft and Oracle working together. He joined Microsoft in 1992 from Sun Microsystems and took the position of program manager in the Windows Developer Relations Group.
“When I first came to Microsoft, the first week they asked me to kind of bring ISVs to Windows NT at that point,” Nadella said. “I said, ‘You can’t bring an ISV to Windows NT without bringing Oracle to Windows NT.'”
Nadella said the new collaboration could allow companies to more quickly move workloads from existing data centers to the public cloud.
However, the two companies have not completely given up competition. Oracle and Microsoft will continue to compete to sell cloud-based infrastructure, but Azure is larger and more mature, allowing Oracle to maintain its products even as customers adopt other clouds. I hope they will continue to use it. And there’s nothing stopping long-time Oracle customers from considering Microsoft’s Azure database.
Tensions between the companies reached a high point in 2000, when Microsoft was in the midst of a landmark antitrust lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice.oracle spoke to media companies He allegedly hired a detective agency that offered money to a janitor working in the Washington office of a Microsoft-backed industry group to buy trash from the group.
Ellison co-founded Oracle in 1977 and is the fifth richest person in the world, while Bill Gates, who co-founded Microsoft with Paul Allen in 1975, ranks fourth. That’s what it means. bloomberg.
