OpenAI on Monday announced its new, more powerful GPT-4 Turbo artificial intelligence model at its first in-person event, and revealed new options for users to create custom versions of the viral ChatGPT chatbot. It’s also lowering the prices companies and developers pay to run their software.
OpenAI’s announcement shows that one of the technology industry’s hottest companies is rapidly evolving its services to stay ahead of rivals like Anthropic. Google and Meta In the AI arms race. ChatGPT set a record as the fastest growing consumer app in history just months after its launch and now has about 100 million weekly active users, OpenAI announced Monday. More than 92% of Fortune 500 companies use the platform, up from 80% in August.
The event also featured a surprise appearance by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
“The systems we need to aggressively move forward with our roadmap require us to be at the top of our game, and we can ensure that we not only have the best systems for training, but also for you. We’re going to do everything in our power to do that, and it’s not just about inference, it’s about the most computing,” Nadella told OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on stage with him. He added: “That’s how we progress.”
According to PitchBook, earlier this year Microsoft increased its investment in OpenAI (by an additional $10 billion), making it the year’s largest AI investment, and in April the company $300 million stock sale It is valued at $27 billion to $29 billion, and investors include Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.Just last month, OpenAI reportedly in negotiations to close a deal that led to an $80 billion valuation.
Altman said in his Monday speech that today’s announcement grew out of conversations over the past year about the needs of developers.
Here’s what OpenAI announced on Monday:
GPT-4 Turbo
GPT-4 Turbo is a modern AI model that provides answers with context up to April 2023. The previous version ended in January 2022. For example, if you ask his GPT-4, who won the Super Bowl in February 2022, he couldn’t tell you. GPT-4 turbo can.
“I’m as angry as you are, if not more upset, that GPT’s knowledge of the world ended in 2021,” Altman said in a Monday speech.
It also accepts more input. GPT-4 Turbo accepts input up to 300 pages in length, whereas previous versions were limited to approximately 3,000 words. This means you can ask them to summarize the entire book.
GPT-4 also supports DALL-E 3 AI-generated images and text-to-speech. You can also choose from six preset voices, so you can hear different voices answering your questions.
OpenAI says GPT-4 Turbo is currently available in preview for developers and will be released to all developers in the coming weeks.
OpenAI said it will also lower prices for developers. “The GPT-4 Turbo input token is 3x cheaper than GPT-4 at $0.01, and the output token is 2x cheaper at $0.03,” the company said, which helps businesses and developers collect large amounts of information through AI models. It means you need to save more costs in doing so.
personalized chatbot

OpenAI
Until now, ChatGPT’s enterprise and business products were the only way users could upload their own data to train and customize chatbots for specific industries and use cases. Now, we’ve added the option for anyone to create a custom chatbot.
AI “agents” have been one of the most talked-about uses of the technology in recent years, allowing for the type of personalization that consumers are already familiar with through pop culture representations such as Tony Stark’s JARVIS and PAM from the Marvel movies. Many startups are competing to provide AI tools that have been developed. on Disney Channel’s Smart House.
“Anyone can easily build their own GPT – no coding required,” the company said in a release. “You can create it for yourself, just for use within your company, or you can create it for everyone. Creating is as easy as starting a conversation, providing instructions or additional knowledge, and selecting features like web search, image creation, data analysis, and more. ”
More than 2 million developers who are building their own tools using ChatGPT’s API will also be able to customize their chatbots, allowing consumers to customize their chatbots even more, including the apps and websites they use regularly. Personalized AI chatbots are likely to appear in locations.
Open the AI version of the App Store
By allowing users and developers to launch their own personalized AI chatbots, OpenAI is introducing a new revenue driver to the company. It’s its own version of an app store.
The GPT Store will allow people who create their own GPTs to make them available for public download, and in the coming months people will be able to earn money based on the number of uses of the GPTs they create. OpenAI says it will.
“Once in the store, GPT becomes searchable and has the potential to move up the leaderboards,” the company wrote in a release. “We’ll also spotlight his GPTs, the most useful and fun we’ve found in categories like productivity, education, and ‘just for fun.’ ”
New all-in-one image generation, browsing and summarization
Until Monday, ChatGPT users had to jump between different apps and websites to use all of OpenAI’s tools, resulting in a slightly higher learning curve. The company announced Monday that it has streamlined its AI tools into one location. ChatGPT allows image generation, browsing, data analysis, document upload, and PDF searching via DALL-E. Until now, the only competing chatbot that allowed PDF searches was Anthropic’s Claude.
copyright shield
Amid the growing number of legal cases related to generative AI, Altman said Monday that OpenAI would “step in and protect our customers” and “pay the costs we incur if we face legal claims related to copyright infringement.” Announced. This echoes similar statements by Google, Microsoft, and Adobe.
