Nicole Kidman won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival, but her big moment was marred by grief over the death of her beloved mother.
On Saturday, “Baby Girl” director Halina Rain read a statement onstage announcing the loss.
Kidman arrived in Venice but soon returned home after learning that her mother, Janelle Kidman, had died.
“I am in shock and must go to my family, but this award belongs to her,” Kidman said in a statement. “She shaped me, guided me and made me who I am, and I am so grateful to be able to say her name to all of you through Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking and my heart is broken.”
“Nicole, we love you all,” Lane said after reading the statement.
Kidman’s representative said: people The magazine said the whole family was “heartbroken” and asked that their privacy be respected.

She continued, “My mother didn’t necessarily have the career she wanted, but she was determined to give her daughters an equal opportunity. That gave me life, and she, along with my father, gave me life.”
