New Orleans’ Cash Money Records artists reunite to headline Essence Fest on Friday night
The annual Away Festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary and is the largest African-American cultural and music festival in the United States. Of course, big names will be taking to the stage. Organizers say at least 20 big names are expected to perform over the weekend. WDSU reporter Shay O’Connor introduces some of the artists who will be headlining each night, from Usher to Janet Jackson to the Cash Money Records reunion that will kick off the first day. New Orleanians say they can’t wait. You know, we all looked up to Essence. They were part of our life and culture in New Orleans. As Essence Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary, festival-goers will also get to experience some highly anticipated performances. Look forward to the reunion of Cash Money Records, hosted by Uptown native Brian Birdman Williams. Coincidentally, the label is also celebrating its 30th anniversary as a record label. It’s so exciting for us to have all of us come together for one part of our lives. You can imagine he’s excited about the S. Claiborne Credit Card. That’s right. Baby Gangsta, aka Christopher BJ Dorsey, says he’s looking forward to performing in late 2023. He was released from prison after serving about 12 years. Since then, he has spent a lot of time encouraging local youth to do their best to succeed, including here at the Orleans Justice Center. You know, being smart, being educated, and, you know, walking straight is a right. In the late ’90s, there were several Cash Money artists who had great success in the hip-hop world. In the early 2000s, HOT BOYZ released some big hits like “Blingbling,” “We On Fire,” and “I Need A HOT GIRL.” All three albums they released as a group were huge commercial successes. Another big hit produced by JUVENILE, the song still makes you feel the love for it all over the world. When I see the reactions we get from people in Africa, China and different places around the world, I think that’s what resonates with me the most. All of the members of the group continue to enjoy success while being at different stages in their careers. Baby says Cash Money’s greatest achievement is the fans coming together to see their impact on their faces. The Essence Festival is no exception. Essence means a lot to us as people and to the culture of New Orleans. I love Essence and I’m so excited for it. Baby also had the opportunity to be honored at the street renaming ceremony. Tomorrow night, as we head into Essence Festival Weekend on WDSU News 6, we’ll talk about Native filmmakers who got a chance to capture the love.
