Being locked out of email is no fun. First, if you forget your username or password, you must go through all the security verification steps to reset it. Or maybe you thought you had your information, but after multiple attempts, you’re locked out of your account forever. This can also happen if someone else tries to log in to your account with a username similar to yours, and accidentally locks you out in the process due to all the wrong attempts.
Even if you have account recovery information on file, it may not be enough. Perhaps the recovery information stored in your files is in an old email, or something you don’t remember your login information for. We’ve all been there.
In either case, whether you return to your account depends on why you can’t access it in the first place. Many of us rely on email every day to keep in touch with friends and family, receive newsletters, and process important documents and communications, so many of us find ourselves locked out of email. It is important to know what to do if this happens.

We’ve all been locked out of our accounts at one time or another. Fortunately, most email platforms make re-access relatively easy, with security as a top priority. That said, it’s a good idea to save your username and password in a safe place (the old-fashioned pen-and-paper method is fine) to avoid the risk of getting locked out. Of course, use best practices for secure passwords whenever possible.
