Ask and you will receive it. Just a few days after asking Nat to name Mackenzie Gore the first day’s starter, Davy Martinez did. Just that. Davy believes that now is the time for Gore to lead the rotation.
Despite the inconsistent season, Gore was the Nut Best Starter in 2024. He posted a sub-4 ERA and hit 181 batters in 166.1 innings. The Southpaw ended strong while he struggled mid-season. Gore needed it badly. In the past, he had the habit of starting the season strongly before removing stretches. 2024 looked the same, but he was able to pull it together.
Mackenzie Gore has the top of the rotation, but he needs to be more consistent to be the true top of the rotation pitcher. At just 26 years old, he still has enough time to put it all together. He also didn’t have much luck on his side in 2024. If that level goes up, Gore could be a big year.
He will likely face Zach Wheeler on the first day, a tall job for young people. Gore has the raw ability to become one day Wheeler Caliber Pitcher, but he’s not there yet. Wheeler is a great example of how a pitcher peaks later in his career. Wheeler excelled for the Mets, but when he entered his 30s he reached a new level with the Phillies.
Hopefully it won’t take Gore that long, but it shows you shouldn’t give up raw talent. This is the start of Gore’s first day and I feel it’s not his last. Mackenzie Gore is only hurting the surface of his abilities.
