If you die without making a will, your assets often pass to your next of kin. However, this is not always an easy process. This is especially true if surviving relatives do not come forward or cannot be found.
This is more common than you might think, as various studies show that between half and two-thirds of adults do not have a will. In such cases, spouses, civil partners and next of kin may be able to recover their estate, but they may need to provide evidence of the relationship.
