Ashford, Conn. (WFSB) – A child was bitten by a raccoon in Ashford, animal control officials reported.
“It had its arm wrapped around my leg,” she explained. “It really hurt.”
State Police said they responded to the incident on Fitz Road to assist officers.
Video of the incident was captured by surveillance cameras:
A girl was attacked by a raccoon in Ashford. The family provided a video of the attack to Channel 3.
It happened around 7:55 am on Friday.
“I went out to catch the bus and a raccoon was there and tried to attack me,” said Rylee MacNamara, 5, of Ashford. “It didn’t want to leave my feet.”
Riley McNamara said she and her mother suffered several bite marks and scratches before she pulled the animal away.
A panicked Logan, Riley’s mother screams for help.
“Ferocious raccoon, help!” said Logan.
After she threw the raccoon away, the raccoon fled into the forest.
No word yet on whether the animals had rabies.
“I thought maybe she slammed her fingers against the door. I had no idea she had a raccoon wrapped around her leg,” Logan said.
They went to the hospital, got vaccinated against rabies and were home within hours.
“We panicked at first. We were scared more than anything,” Logan said.
Neighbor Jessica Gessey isn’t surprised this happened.
“The woods around here are… scary.
“It’s disturbing that it’s so close to our home,” added Ashford’s Dave Frank.
The animal control team spent Friday morning in the woods tracking the animals. But it was nowhere to be found.
The McNamara may take it into their own hands by setting traps around the house.
Riley and Logan return to the hospital every few days for the next two weeks for more injections.
Their McNamaras also say that in the near future, children will no longer be allowed to go out alone.
