An Ohio mother is accused of deceiving people that her child had cancer in order to raise money.
Pamela Reed, 41, is currently charged with theft by deception.
The Noble County Sheriff’s Office said it received information that Reed had lied about the child’s health after already collecting thousands of dollars in likely medical bills.
Several local organizations participated in the fundraiser, with one contributing about $8,000, according to the sheriff’s office.
“After receiving information, Sheriff McKee, along with detectives and child services, began investigating the charges and were able to confirm that the child did not have cancer,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Mr. Reed was arrested this week. She reportedly told authorities that she had “exaggerated and fabricated her medical condition” in order to receive her donations.
“We are extremely proud of the way our children’s services staff and law enforcement worked together to quickly take action to keep our children safe. This is not necessarily a run-of-the-mill scenario,” Sheriff Jason McKee and Family Services Director Misty Wells said in a joint statement.
Reed remains incarcerated at the Noble County Jail, according to online court records. The sheriff’s office announced that her bail was set at $50,000.
