SDSU extension
BROOKINGS — SDSU Extension will host a virtual financial education workshop to help women develop spending and long-term plans.
“Women live longer than men on average, but they earn less than men and have gaps in their work careers. This affects their retirement savings, Social Security benefits, and long-term financial security.” said Lorna Saboe-Wounded, SDSU Extension family resource management specialist. “Women who take on more childcare responsibilities may also face reduced income.”
“Money Talk for Women” will be held online via Zoom every Tuesday from 6:30pm to 8:00pm from March 12th to April 9th. Participants complete assignments independently and meet virtually once a week with their group and facilitator.
During the five-week program, Saboe Wounded Head will lead participants in discussions about financial basics, insurance, investing, retirement, and planning for future life events. Guest speakers will also present information on specific topics during the session.
By the end of the program, participants will develop a spending plan that reflects their values and financial goals, examine their current insurance policies to make long-term risk management decisions, and develop investment goals, Saboe-Wounded Head said. He said he will assess his retirement investment needs and examine his assets. -Planning options.
The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority’s 2021 National Financial Capacity Survey supports the need for continuing financial education. After the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans have improved their ability to save money and pay their bills on time, but their job and income stability has declined. Financial knowledge helps you save for emergencies and retirement, and pay your bills on time.
“Now more than ever, women need to learn household management strategies and become financially empowered,” said Saboe Wounded Head.
Registration for the workshop is $50, but there are a limited number of scholarships available. Participants will receive a copy of the book Money Talk: A Financial Guide for Women. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search for “money.”
