According to the fire department, one person was injured after jumping from the second floor.
MINNEAPOLIS — One person was injured Saturday morning in Minneapolis after jumping from a second-story window in an attempt to escape a fire in a board-covered apartment building.
According to the Minneapolis Fire Department, several people were inside the building when the fire broke out, and one of them jumped out of an upper-floor window. Authorities say the person has been medically evaluated by Ho Chi Minh City paramedics and is in “stable” condition.
Deputy Chief Rita Juran said the crew was working to figure out if anyone else was inside.
“There are unconfirmed reports that there may have been other people in the building, which we cannot confirm at this time. State firefighters were called to the scene to assist with the investigation,” Juran said.
“I’m just in shock,” said Michelle Davis. Davis lives next door to the building where the fire broke out.
“I looked out the window and saw fire erupting from the first, second and third floors,” Davis said. “I wish nobody was there…it’s known…homeless…come and sleep at night to escape the cold.”
Authorities were called to a boarded-up apartment near the Leaning Tower of Pizza just before 6:15 a.m. and reported smoke was coming from the building. It spread all over, collapsing the roof of the alley and part of the outer wall.
The Minneapolis Fire Department said no other buildings were damaged.
according to City of Minneapolis website, the property is owned by C David George.of city website shows 121 violations on the property dating back to June 7, 2000.
KARE 11 staff emailed C David George and called the phone number listed on the vacant building sign, but got no response.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
