Michigan’s minimum wage rose 23 cents on Sunday, January 1, surpassing $10 an hour for the first time in state history.
Michigan’s minimum wage will jump from $9.87 an hour in 2022 to $10.10 in 2023. State law requires wage increases every year unless the annual unemployment rate exceeds 8.5%. This is why there was no increase in 2021.

Depending on the outcome of the court’s ruling, the minimum wage could rise sharply later this winter. The 2018 ballot proposal set the 2023 minimum wage at $13.03 and the minimum wage for tipped workers at $11.73. Congress has amended plans to lower the minimum wage, but organizers of the proposal say the move is unconstitutional.
A decision is expected on February 19th. According to a state news release.
The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 an hour since 2010. This adds up to about $15,000 a year for a full-time worker. At his $10.10 an hour in Michigan, one year of work equates him to $21,000. A full-time worker earning $13.03 an hour would make $27,100 a year.

In 30 states, the minimum wage exceeds the federal tax rate. By 2022, 19 states will have a minimum wage of $11 or more. He was only in seven states with a minimum wage of $13 or more.

In 2022, Michigan’s minimum wage was the 26th highest in the nation, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. USDL data showing minimum wages for all states in 2023 are not yet available.
$10.10 is the highest minimum wage in Michigan history, but not the highest after adjusting for inflation. In 1979, his $2.90 minimum wage in Michigan made him worth $12.65 in today’s dollars.
