A Metrorail train derailed late Friday morning between Potomac Yard and National Airport stations in northern Virginia, transportation officials said.

There were no injuries.

The train was headed for Potomac Yard, but derailed just south of the National Airport Station. Metro said about 50 passengers on the derailed train were transported by shuttle and continued their journey.

Details about what happened were not immediately available, but News4 video confirms that the train that derailed Friday was a 7000 series car.

The 7000 series trains were suspended from service following a derailment outside Arlington Cemetery in October 2021. After this derailment, it was discovered that the wheels of the 7000 series train were moving outward. That change led to the derailment in October 2021.

In April, Metro and the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission approved a plan to move all 7000 series trains back into service in the final stages.

WMATA General Manager Randy Clark and Public Relations Officer Sherry Lee arrived on scene.
