Dr. Lisa Scheinin, a former Los Angeles County deputy medical examiner, stands by the original report that listed pneumonia, anemia and prescription drug intoxication as causes of Brittany’s death.
The initial report described her illness as “acute pneumonia with community-acquired infection” and noted that she had “hypochromic microcytic anemia”, typically caused by iron deficiency.
“Chronic anemia can lead to poor health outcomes and increase vulnerability to infectious diseases,” the report states.
The anemia is thought to be due in part to Brittany’s heavy periods. Scheining believes her death could have been prevented if the anemia had been treated.
