Amid heightened tensions between India and the Maldives following the Maldives minister’s controversial tweet regarding Lakshadweep, a tweet by Maldivian politician Maaiz Mahmood has gone viral online. Mahmood, who claims to be a “teacher by profession” and a member of Maldives’ ruling Progressive Party, shared an image of Bora Bora in French Polynesia and claimed it was the Maldives. The Minister appreciated the scenic beauty of the islands, which he believes are part of the Maldives, and encouraged tourists to visit the islands, comparing it to Lakshadweep.
“Sunset in the Maldives. You won’t see this in Lakshadweep,” he wrote on X while using the hashtag #VisitMaldives. He also tagged Indian Prime Minister Modi’s X account in his own post. However, he deleted the tweet after receiving criticism.

As soon as this photo was shared, several social media users mocked him and pointed out his embarrassing antics. His post was also flagged as false by Community Notes. “This is not the Maldives. This is Bora Bora, French Polynesia,” said the community note, which also shared the original website where the image was taken.
Many users trolled his offensive tweet, joking that he should have searched Google before posting the photo. “But this is Bora Bora, 14,800 kilometers from the Maldives,” one user wrote.
Another person commented: “Yeah.” In India, you can only see the sunrise in the morning and in the evening. ” A third added: “This is not the Maldives.” This is self-sabotage. ”
Notably, the controversy started after PM Modi posted a photo of himself snorkeling during his visit to Lakshadweep. The post went viral and garnered positive responses from social media users about the tourism prospects of Ruskshadeep Islands. Many suggested that the Union Territory island could even become an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives.
The visit was criticized by some Maldivian ministers, who made derogatory remarks about the prime minister and PM Modi. Three members of the island nation’s parliament claimed that PM Modi is trying to project Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives through the visit. The comments sparked outrage on social media, with many Indians expressing their displeasure and even canceling their planned trips to the Maldives.
