As a kid, Adam Trent loved going to musicals at Pikes Peak Center.
“Wow, what a great play,” he remembers thinking. “I’d love to perform in a theater like that one day.”
And soon, he’ll be returning to the Pikes Peak Center stage on Friday for a family-friendly show featuring music, magic and comedy with plenty of audience participation.
“If you love magic, this is the show for you. Even if you don’t love magic, this show is definitely for you because it blends so many different art forms together,” Trent said.
Trent is known for his roles in the Broadway hit “The Illusionist,” the world’s best-selling touring magic show, and the ABC primetime special “The Magic Maker.” The Boulder native has also appeared on “America’s Got Talent” and “The Today Show,” as well as his own 10-episode television series, “The Road Tricks,” on Netflix.
He started doing magic at the age of 9 after reading a book on magic, and from there he went on to perform at birthday parties, do street shows, and eventually moved to Los Angeles at age 18 to pursue a career in entertainment. His favorite thing about magic is the interactive nature of the art form.
“When I was a kid watching shows, I loved anything that allowed me to interact with the audience, and nothing gives you that kind of interaction like magic,” he said. “One of the things I love more than anything is bringing volunteers onstage to join in the magic. It makes every show feel special and makes every show feel different.”
Trent describes his magic act as “futuristic,” using technology for new illusions and innovative tricks, such as cloning himself and teleporting across the stage.
“It’s not a traditional rabbit-out-of-a-hat magic show. There’s a lot of comedy in it. There’s a lot of audience participation and it’s kind of a show reimagined for modern times,” he said. “Of all art forms, I think magic is best experienced live, so for me, performing it live and having the audience up on stage and participating is especially powerful because it’s just a few feet from your face.”
