This weekend was one of the most embarrassing things in recent Nationals history. They were one of the most embarrassing things in recent Nationals history as manager Davy Martinez was wiped out at home by the final Miami Marlins to bring their lost streak into eight games while he locked the blame on the players rather than the players and his staff. The attacks were energized in one of the series, with pitching swinging. The pitching then went back to type in the next two games. They now lead the Marlins by one in the NL East standings and are tied with them in the loss line.
Following the game, Robert Hassel III and Jose Tena were given triple-A options, with Deiren Lyle and Brady House calling. Raised in Rochester after his relegation, Reel is looking to perform better in his second big league stint, but House finally gets a chance at the big players after destroying Rochester baseball this year. Luckily for them, one of the worst pitching clubs in baseball is rolling into town for four games set with the Colorado Rockies.
Historically awful start, and since then it improved
The Rockies are at a pace with one of the worst seasons in baseball history, with a 14-57 record tied with the 1932 Boston Red Sox and the 1904 Washington Senators with the worst win rate in baseball history through 71 games. Their -203 disparity is 90 runs than baseball’s second Worst, and it’s very likely that it will cover the 2023 Auckland track and field mark with the worst of -339. They have been playing better baseball recently, but have a 5-7 record in the last 12 games.
It’s not a good record by any means, but it’s better than the historically awful pace they’ve been in, and these five victories account for more than 33% of their total yearly victories. There are several semi-bright spots on the roster, including catcher hunter Goodman and outfielder Jordan Beck, but for the most part it’s a rather barren roster of MLB-level talent.
Team Statistics:

Team HR Leader: Hunter Goodman (11)

Game 1 – Monday 6:45 EDT
COL: Carson Palmquist (0-4)-22 IP, 7.77 ERA, 1.82 Whip
By the start of the five innings in 2025, he has yet to overcome five innings of this season. This was his last start vs. Giants case, where he left after four innings in the innings, averaging over 24 pitches and giving up two runs.
WSH: Jake Irvin (5-3)-83.1IP, 4.21 ERA, 1.25 Whip
Irvin finally seemed to turn the corner after eight shutout performances against the Giants on May 24, but in his three starts he got in just five innings, giving up 13 acquired runs that were acquired in the process. Command was his enemy in his final start with the Mets. He walked three batters and hit one, taking 100 pitches and earning five innings of four four-run balls. Irvin threw a six 1⁄3 It’s a two-run ball inning in the start with the Coors in April with the Rockies, so I hope that we can lead some of what he was doing that day to this start.
Game 2 – Tuesday 6:45 EDT
col: Antonio Senzaterra (1-10)-66 IP, 7.23 ERA, 2.03 Whip
When your whip shows you are on average roughly meeting 1⁄3 It’s worth the innings of the season, but that’s usually not a very good indication. If you think it has something to do with him pitching half of his game at Coorsfield, I can actually let him know that it’s even worse on the road. That was the same in his final start, giving seven innings of four innings of work against the Giants. If the bats of Nut can’t get it against him, then there’s not much hope left for them.
WSH: Michael Soroka (3-4)-42 IP, 5.14 ERA, 1.12 Whip
Like Irvin, Soroka was tagged with five innings against the Mets in his final start and four runs for the Mets. Nonetheless, I am sure I will still bounce back with Soroka, as his thing has looked sharp recently. The Rockies lineup has performed 19 strikeouts against the Braves on Sunday, so Soroka should be able to run a strikeout number against them on Tuesday.
Game 3 – Wednesday 6:45 EDT
col: German Marquez (2-8)-68 IP, 6.62 ERA, 1.66 whip
Despite the poor overall numbers for the year, Marquez has been excellent in his recent pitcher, with a 4.03 ERA in his final seven starts, including five innings of one run ball against the Braves in his final start. It’s not a big number yet, but it’s been significantly improved to the number at the beginning of his year.
WSH: Mitchell Parker (4-7)-74.1IP, 4.84 ERA, 1.35 Whip
The opposite of what can be said about Marquez can be said about Parker. It’s been a strong struggle since posting a 6.55 ERA in his final seven starts after a very solid start of the season. He had the worst start of Friday, 1⁄3 He gave up six runs against the Marlins before an inning and rainy delay ended his night. It was the norm for him that he found what he had in the first six starts of the year, but he needs to find it quickly.
Game 4 – Thursday 1:05 EDT
col: Chase Drawland (2-7)-50.2 IP, 6.57 ERA, 1.54 Whip
Former Tennessee Vol and top 10 draft pick Chase Drawland were engraved in the minor leagues and forced to raise him by the Rockies, but it was a struggle as he has a 6-north age at the start of the first 11 big leagues. He shows flashes of light everywhere. For example, he gave up a solid inning that he gave up six innings in the final start, but the overall job was unstable.
WSH: Trevor Williams (3-8)-69.1 IP, 5.71 ERA, 1.43 WHIP
Williams did almost everything he could ask him in his final start. 1⁄3 Give up the innings and two runs. Williams isn’t going to dominate the lineup often, so all you can ask is that he keeps his team in the ball game. He has just a few starts to prove he’s worth staying in the Nats rotation before Cade Cavalli is likely to be called out and slam someone.
How bad can you do?
The Marlins swept home at the final location certainly felt like a rock bottom, but that could get even worse if the 14-57 Rockies came to town and gave them a piece. If they can’t even take care of the business against the historically bad team and the Rockies, after this, things will ugh on their road trips, including a series against the Dodgers, Padres and Tigers. It’s time to find out what this team is made up of.
