People of a certain age will remember lily allen‘s pop culture presence seemed to be around the mid-to-late 2000s.
Like many female celebrities at the time, Lily was subject to near-constant coverage and scrutiny from British tabloids and the media in general.
At 2 minutes and 55 seconds into the video above, Jonathan suggests moving Lily, the “only sexually attractive young woman” on the show, away from Russell and Noel to a “sexless zone.” There is. “And Lily might go home with her dress on,” he follows.
Lily’s reaction to his comment is very revealing.
“Are you telling me? We’re not rapists,” Noel replied with mock anger.
“If you’re not a rapist, why are you wearing a cloak?” Jimmy asks.
After joking about the difference between Jack the Ripper, a serial killer and a rapist, Russell says: There is no direct corollary between rape and cape, it’s just a rhyme. Please leave him alone. ”
In a new interview with GraziaLily reflected on what it felt like to be made such a frankly disgusting joke. And, not surprisingly, she wasn’t a fan of that her experience.
She described it as “a moment where I was on a chat show with Russell Brand, Noel Fielding and Jonathan Ross, and I think there was a comment about me being raped or something.”
“And I laugh along with you. Looking back on it now, it’s really scary.”
Lilly added that her feelings about the incident are definitely different now than they were then, and that’s due to both the passage of time and the pervasiveness of misogyny in pop culture in the 2000s.
“It’s offensive, but I don’t think it felt that way at the time, because that was the culture.”
