LEXINGTON, N.C. (WGHP) — Davidson County’s Hispanic community is rallying around a Lexington family in a time of need.
Three people were shot at a Lexington home last weekend, including 48-year-old Rigo Mejia.
he lost his life.
The community hosted a food sale at Templo Emanuel to raise money for the funeral and medical expenses of Miguel Mejia, who is still fighting for his life in the hospital.
“We really wanted to help,” resident Saralyn Mondragon said.
A bowl of warm enchiladas with tamales and francocho was lovingly prepared to help a family in a time of need.
“We all come together for the good of our communities and help each other in any way we can,” Mondragon said.
Organizers of the food sale for the Mejia family say it’s the least they can do.
Lexington police said they believe the shooting from Saturday was random.
Karen Coote was there when it happened, and so was her boyfriend. He was shot, but he is fine.
Her cousin Miguel is still hospitalized.
“We just have to keep believing he’s going to be OK,” Couto said.
They keep their faith.
“My family and I are really grateful that everyone is coming together. We really appreciate it,” Couto said.
Zachary Plowman, 39, faces a long list of charges in the wake of the shooting.
