A leaked email written by WME executive Brent Richard in March 2016 sheds light on the concerns and risks surrounding UFC President Dana White’s future and the challenges facing the promotion. The email, discovered in the ongoing UFC antitrust case, was part of a lender presentation before WME acquired UFC in 2016.
The email, titled “Risks and Mitigations,” discusses a variety of topics, with the second point mentioning potential risks including “injury, death, CTE, and more.” This reflects increased awareness of health and safety issues in martial arts, particularly those related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
At the time, CTE had not been officially diagnosed in UFC fighters, but the email acknowledged the possibility and emphasized the importance of discussing it. The UFC has previously highlighted its commitment to athlete health and safety by highlighting its head injury research partnerships with organizations such as the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and the Cleveland Clinic.
The email also touched on Dana White’s future as a key executive with the organization. He also cited the need to develop a retention, transition and succession plan for Mr. White. Despite the concerns, White signed a new seven-year contract with the UFC in 2019, signaling his continued role as the UFC’s leader.
The leaked emails provide insight into discussions within WME regarding potential challenges and risks associated with the UFC, including legal issues such as ongoing antitrust litigation. The lawsuit, brought by former fighters, alleges anti-competitive conduct by the UFC aimed at cutting fighters’ pay and eliminating competition.
