Lady Gaga spoke with Good Day Chicago’s Jake Hamilton about Joker: Folie à Deux.
She spoke about how her character, Harley Quinn, created an alter-ego to protect herself, something Stefani Germanotta also did when she became Lady Gaga.
“I think it’s no secret why I wanted to make this movie,” she said. “A big part of the theme of ‘Joker’ is this idea of having an alter ego that protects you.”
Gaga said of her character, “Harley ultimately emerges from a broken place in this movie, so in that sense this is kind of the beginning for her.”
When asked how she created the Lady Gaga persona, she said, “Something really horrible happened to me as a child, and I think that prompted me to create that persona.”
So where does Stefani end and Lady Gaga begin? “I would just say it’s all about me, the real me,” she says, adding, “I’ve definitely played with artificiality. I love costumes. I think makeup is a glamorous way to express yourself.”
