Callista and I stayed up until 1:40 am on Saturday to watch the US House Speaker’s 15th Vote.
We watched Hakeem Jeffries’ pathetic, partisan rant. His special position minimized the dignity and unity that should be part of the transition of power in the House.
In contrast, I was reminded of the dignity and warmth of Democratic leader Dick Geffard as he handed the gavel in a proper and reverent gesture, acknowledging his first victory in 40 years.
Then we listened in admiration as Chairman Kevin McCarthy delivered his historic speech. His speech came too late for most Americans to hear live. However, we encourage you to visit and watch (rather than read) C-Span. His sincere attitude and depth of historical understanding of America were astounding.
IRS on chopping block on first day of legislative work under Speaker McCarthy
It was a unified speech by leaders who understood that the Speaker was the only legislative leader identified in the U.S. Constitution.
The House should be the “People’s House,” guided by the tradition of President Abraham Lincoln’s call to government by the people, by the people, for the people.
From the beginning, Speaker McCarthy began to explain how America is governed, not by the Republicans or factions. He said:
It’s night here in Washington, but in some ways it’s like a new beginning – a new start, my friends, this chamber is now fully open for all Americans to visit. would like to send a personal invitation to all Americans. It would be nice to see this institution in action. No more closed doors. But the debate is open to witness what is happening in the People’s Assembly.
From the committee room to this floor, we are committed to passionately seeking truth and embracing debate. No more unsolicited inquiries. Competing ideas are tested in public and the best idea wins. But we also promise to bring Congress to the people. Because I didn’t find the answer in Washington, and I don’t always find it. That’s why one of our first hearings of him will be held at the southern border. Security and sovereignty crises can no longer be ignored.
Speaker McCarthy then deviated markedly from his prepared speech and began to reveal his deepest passions and commitments as a citizen.

My favorite place in this building is not this room.is in the chamber [where] They met earlier in Statuary Hall. My favorite place to take people on tour. You see, this is where Abraham Lincoln served.
A one-term member of parliament sat in the back. I like to go there, I like to stand where he used to stand. I like to look at my watch. Because it’s the same clock and the same view that Abraham Lincoln saw.
I have seen Lincoln serve in the Civil War, the greatest challenge to our Constitution.
I saw him at a time when he was not sure the country could sustain itself. But he dreamed of the future and built railroads across the country. I want all of us to take a moment when you are here. I want you to stand there I want you to see And I want you to think: If America could do it then, we can do it again now.
As you know, Abraham Lincoln gave his life and service to this country. One of his most important observations about America still holds true today. Same as 160 years ago. He said we strive to preserve our fathers’ governments and institutions, pass them on to our children, and pass them on to our children’s children forever.
Fellow Americans, that is still our mission today. At this moment, we must restore our domestic and mutual trust. In that spirit, I will work with all who share our passion to achieve a better future for our country. I hope you will join me.
As Congress, we can only operate together. my door will be opened. Please come by all means.

Watching the entire speech is highly recommended. After discussing the importance of Lincoln, House Speaker McCarthy offered an emotional and powerful take on the painting of Washington crossing the Delaware and the lessons all Americans can learn from that era of patriotism.
This will be a very different and more important speaker than anyone currently imagines. And it will be an American speakership fighting for the beliefs and values of the American people.
