According to his co-star Kate Hudson, she had to fight for the actor to win his role in the film.
“I’m such a cheerleader for actors in this industry, but for rom-coms, the guy has to have chemistry,” Kate explained.
She continued, “We had the energy together. I wanted to play with him. It felt kinetic.”
Kate said they both have a “competitive spirit” and are “super athletic”, which makes it easy for them to “push each other”.
“I love Matthew’s commitment to everything. He’s focused on the razor. What you think he is, he is,” she shared.
Unfortunately, Kate and the studio did not agree on the choice to cast Matthew.
“We kept banging our heads against the wall, but the studio and I disagreed,” Kate explained.
But Kate had a lot of creative control in the flick and got “all the approvals,” so she could fight back and get Matthew cast.
Considering this movie went on to become one of the most iconic rom-coms of the early 2000s, it obviously all worked out.
