At least two people were killed and 11 injured after militants stormed police headquarters in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, officials said.
Witnesses told CNN that up to 10 militants attacked a police station with grenades and opened fire. Sindh Labor Minister Saeed Ghani confirmed the attack to CNN, adding that the case was ongoing.
The Pakistani Taliban, known as Teliku-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack, according to spokesman Mohammad Corasani.
Footage from the scene showed multiple gunshots blaring in the headquarters area, and witnesses said they heard multiple explosions.
Murtaza Wahab Siddiqi, senior leader of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in Karachi’s Sindh province, said the injured were being treated in hospital, one of them in a critical condition.
Edhi Ambulance Service earlier said a police officer and a janitor were killed in the attack and four police rangers were injured.
The attack prompted the Sindh government to declare a state of emergency in Karachi, said its spokesperson Sharjeel Memon.
Pakistan’s Taliban has been designated a foreign terrorist organization by the US State Department since September 2010.
Pakistani authorities have yet to confirm the group’s involvement.
According to a video released by the Chhipa Ambulance Service, rescuers have arrived at the scene of the attack, and gunshots can be heard.
