“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” alum Kandi Burruss is stepping into a new chapter in her acting and producing projects.
Extra’s Mona Kosar Abdi spoke to Kandi about her decision to leave RHOA after 14 seasons.
She said, “For the last few years, for several seasons. [husband Todd Tucker] And I was, you know, going back and forth like, “Is it our time now?” Is it our time now? But this particular season was my contract year, so instead of them basically picking up my options, I was able to make my own choices. So, he and I just sat down and said, “Okay, what do you want? ” I was like, “What?” ”
She continued, “I know that I really wanted to act more, and there were a lot of big things I wanted to do.Even before I announced my decision at the beginning of the year, I knew that my group [Xscape] There was an offer to do a tour in the summer…so it was already on the table. I know that Othello helped me become a producer. So, there were a few things where I was like, “Okay, I know I want to do all these things, but at this time, do I want to say goodbye and walk away from ‘Housewives,’ or what am I doing? ‘I thought, ‘You know what?’ You want to act. ”For example, why am I playing with myself?
Kandi added, “Everyone else leaves and comes back, so take your chances and let them go, and you’ll see them again later in life.”
But will Kandi miss it after leaving “RHOA”?
She replied: “I’m still friends with a lot of the girls, you know what I mean?” I was just trick-or-treating with Kenya. [Moore] The other day I felt that I will always be in their lives and they will always be in my life in some way. And the new people that are part of the cast, Shamea and I as well, we’re like [crosses fingers]you know? So, I’m still going to be there to support them, and I’m still talking to Andy. [Cohen]. I’m still very involved in that circle. ”
She continued, “I’m not going to be in the movie, what do you think?” But I have no intention of returning as a cast member. But when you say, “Will I miss it?” I don’t know, Cynthia. [Bailey] He said he wouldn’t miss it until the promotion for the new season started. ”
Burruss is currently getting more acting work with a recurring role on Hulu’s “Reasonable Doubt.” He ended up appearing on the show after a chance meeting with the show’s creator, Ramullah Mohammed, on a plane.
Kandi and Rahmula ended up exchanging phone numbers and met for dinner. During dinner, Kandi opened up about her interests.
She said: “A week later they called me and were like, ‘Oh yeah, we want you to come for this.’ I was like, ‘What?’” I couldn’t believe it. ”
Kerry Washington is an executive producer and director on the series, but Kandi was unable to work with her. She said, “I heard she was there a lot…Unfortunately she wasn’t there when I was there, but she’s definitely an actress that I love and respect.” Ta.
Kandi is also a producer on the upcoming Broadway revival of Othello starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal.
“There are a lot of really great people, some of whom we just announced as part of the cast, but this is my fourth Broadway production, and at this point in my career, I’m in this position as a Broadway producer,” Burress said. I think I actually own it.”
She said: “Rehearsals actually start in January, I can’t wait, can I?” I’m really looking forward to meeting Jake. I haven’t met him yet… John David Washington, he was one of the stars when we did “Piano Lessons,” so I’ve been close to Denzel many times I had a great opportunity… Now, to be able to work with him as the lead in Othello was like, “Wow,” you know what I mean? So, I’m excited to be able to watch him do his thing at work and just be perched on the wall while they’re being their amazing selves. ”
“Rational Doubt” is currently available on Hulu. “Othello” performances will start on February 24, 2025.
