If you grew up in the ’90s and watched Nickelodeon (especially Nick Toons), you probably know that strange things were happening in the writers’ room.
It’s wild how many non-kid-friendly jokes have appeared in these shows, most of which children don’t understand.
1.

This moment from the season 1 episode “Special Delivery” didn’t quite register in my sweet summer kid’s mind, but rewatching the show for the first time as an adult horrified me. Apparently so does Tommy, who died in a pile of rejected mail when he realized he was just a few steps away from joining the USPS WORKER.
Four.
Robert Mapplethorpe vs. Normal Rockwell
I had heard of Norman Rockwell as a child, but it wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I knew who Mapplethorpe Charlotte, mentioned in the season 3 episode “Mom’s Small Fortune,” was. did not. For those unfamiliar, he was a photographer who explored his BDSM culture of gay men in New York in his late ’60s and early ’70s.
Five.
clarence thomas hearing
Later in the same episode, Charlotte mentions Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, whom Anita Hill accused of sexual harassment in the early ’90s.
6.
howard playboy magazine
When Lil goes through his father’s drawer in the Season 3 episode “Twins’ Pique,” it’s clearly revealed to be a playboy.
Rugrats Nick Toon wasn’t the only one with a Playboy joke. In this season 1 episode, Loco modern life“Carnival Knowledge,” reading “Playslug,” which has a slug running a merry-go-round at a carnival and a bikini-clad slug on the cover.
This moment in the season 1 episode “Canned”, which subtly hinted that Rocko works as a telephone sex operator, was another wild moment that I never quite understood. Year.
Season 1 was really full of these moments.
Ten.
beach censor bar
If this from the season one episode “Sand in Your Navel” really flew over your head, it’s mostly because you didn’t know what the word “censorship” meant when you were six years old. Plus, Rocko wasn’t wearing his pants, as he normally doesn’t wear them. I don’t think he had anything to hide.
11.

In the Season 4 episode “Doug & Patti Sittin’ in a Tree,” Judy gives Doug advice on how to dress for his first date with Patti. according to “handkerchief cord“Wearing one in your left pocket means you’re bottom.
In the Season 3 episode “Doug and Patti PI”, there is a moment when Doug appears to be holding a small piece of paper with “I ❤️ HEAD” written on it.
As it turns out, Doug actually has one of Mr. Dink’s bumper stickers that says “I ❤️ HEADCHEESE,” but given that the shot needs to be animated frame-by-frame, it’s a shame the animators One of the problems.
13.
Miriam and her smoothie
Boy, did Miriam love her smoothie. This was a running joke in all five seasons of Hey Arnold! It’s really not funny when she’s old enough to realize that she wasn’t just using fruit, ice and hot sauce.
In the Season 4 episode “Veterans Day”, while Grandpa Phil and Mr. Johansen take Arnold and Gerald on an expedition, Phil begins to discuss a sexy encounter with a farmer’s daughter during World War II. . Johansen stopped him before he could get a good result, but it’s easy to see where it was going.
15.
Helga’s trembling girlhood
It still amazes me that they managed to get away with this line. In the season 4 episode “Helga’s Parrot”, Helga writes a poem containing the line “Arnold, you make my girlhood tremble”.
16.
Gronburu sex education lesson
If you’ve ever wondered how monster babies are made, Season 1 explains. ahhh!!! real monster, in “Blob Attack”. The episode opens with Gromble delivering what is clearly supposed to be a sex education lesson on reproduction.
