John Cena On Saturday night, he announced he will retire from professional wrestling next year after 20 years in the ring.
The wrestler-turned-actor delivered a heartfelt speech to the stadium crowd. World Wrestling Entertainment Toronto fans booed in disappointment when Cena said the 2025 season would be his last. He promised a farewell tour with dozens of shows and an epic final match, and assured fans he would remain involved with the wrestling franchise that launched his career.
“Thank you so much for letting me play in this house that I’ve built over the years,” Cena told the crowd.
At a press conference after the event, Cena told reporters he felt he was “at his limit” physically, but that didn’t mean he had to walk away from the sport he loves.
Cena, a 16-time WWE champion, rose to fame in the early 2000s as fan-favorite “Doctor of Saganomics” – a rapper who wore gold chains and a backwards hat and challenged wrestlers to rap battles – and has since played other popular characters both in the ring and on screen.
Cena had leading roles in the films “Blockers” and “Suicide Squad,” had a recurring role in the “Fast and Furious” series, and most recently appeared in the comedy-thriller “Argyle” and the box office hit “Barbie.”
