Joe Alwyn is on a roll as the lead in the acclaimed new movie Kinds of Kindness, but thanks to a little album called The Tortured Poets Department, Topic A remains stuck in his old relationship with superstar Taylor Swift.
Alwyn, 33, broke his silence about Taylor in a new Q&A The Sunday Timesasks whether he can escape his status as Swift’s former lover.
Alwyn declined to answer a question about whether he’d heard any of the songs allegedly written about him, including “So Long, London” or “The Black Dog,” saying he hopes “everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving and committed relationship that lasted over six and a half years.”
“This is a difficult issue to address,” he continues. “What’s unusual and extraordinary about this situation is that after a week it suddenly became public and the outside world was able to weigh in.”
He also describes their former relationship as “very real,” in contrast to the “very unrealistic space” of social media and the tabloids.
He concluded the topic with: “And the truth is, on that last point, there will always be a gap between what is known and what is said. I accept that.”
Joe also stressed that he and Taylor both wanted to keep their relationship private.
“As you all know, we have mutually decided to keep the more intimate details of our relationship private,” Alwyn explains. “It has never been something to be commercialized, and I see no reason to change that now.”
“And this is a little over a year ago now, but I feel blessed to be in a really great place in my life professionally and personally. I feel really good,” he added.
Alwyn did not say whether he’s still in contact with Swift or if he’s dating anyone new.
He simply said, “Given the level of fuss and scrutiny surrounding my past relationships, I think you can understand why I don’t want to open the door to that now.”
Alwyn’s new film, Kinds of Kindness, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, also stars one of Swift’s best friends, Emma Stone, who won the Oscar for Best Actress earlier this year.
