New York federal court documents include previously hidden names of people in some way connected to a notorious late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein The seal will be lifted on Wednesday, officials said.
Many of the more than 150 people named in the civil court filing have previously been linked in some way to Epstein, who committed suicide in 2019 after being arrested on federal child sex trafficking charges. It had been announced.
The soon-to-be-unsealed document was filed in connection with a lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court by Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre against Epstein’s longtime accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.
“Things should start to be unsealed today,” Edward Friedland, the court’s district executive, told CNBC.
The fact that people’s names are on the file does not necessarily mean that they were involved in any wrongdoing.
Mr. Epstein and Mr. Maxwell are the only two to face criminal charges related to years of abuse of girls and young women at residences in New York, the U.S. Virgin Islands and elsewhere.
Judge Loretta Preska ordered the seal unsealed in mid-December.
Mr. Preska has excluded the disclosure of the names of two people, including the woman identified as Doe 107, in order to reconsider the claim that they pose a risk of physical harm in their home country if their identities are publicly revealed. A 30-day extension was granted.
Maxwell is serving a 20-year federal prison sentence for charges related to Epstein’s recruitment and grooming of young women for abuse.
Over the years, Epstein had interactions with former Presidents Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, Britain’s Prince Andrew, and many other wealthy and powerful people.
On Tuesday, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers said in an interview on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” about the list of names, “A lot of people, including Jimmy Kimmel, said that the names weren’t going to show up. I sincerely hope that.” . ”
“I’ll tell you, if that list comes out, I’m definitely going to open some jars,” Rogers said.
Kimmel is the host of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” The show quickly fired back at Rodgers in a tweet on social media site X, suggesting Kimmel would sue Rodgers if he continued to suggest he had an affair with Epstein.
“Dear A——-: For the record, I have never met, flown with, visited, or had any contact with Epstein. Also, obviously – like you… This soft-witted weirdo is such bogus nonsense that you can’t distinguish it from reality,” Kimmel wrote in a tweet.
“Your reckless statements put my family at risk. Please continue and we will further discuss the facts in court.”
McAfee apologized on his show Wednesday for “participating” in Rodgers’ comments.
“I understand why Jimmy was incredibly upset, I totally get that, especially with his position, but Aaron was also like, ‘Hey, this guy says something about me in his monologue.’ And I think he’s just trying to ‘talk’,” McAfee said. “I don’t think he meant anything else, but he’s going to have to clarify that for us.”
