In a somewhat surprising move, Jeff Stoutland’s longtime top assistant Roy Istvan left the Eagles to take the same position on Kevin Stefanski’s Browns staff.
The Browns announced on their website Thursday morning that Istvan, who has been an assistant offensive line coach for the Eagles since 2019, has been hired as an assistant offensive line coach under new Browns O-line coach Andy Dickerson. Dickerson replaces Bill Callahan, who was the Eagles’ offensive line coach under Ray Rose and is now the offensive line coach under his son Brian, the Titans’ new head coach.
The connection between Stephen and Stoutland goes back more than 30 years. Istvan played at Stoutland and coached Stoutland at Southern Connecticut State University in the late 1980s. He joined the Eagles in 2019 after coaching in college for nearly 30 years.
Stoutland posted a video on social media last week that indirectly hinted that he would rejoin Nick Sirianni’s staff, making him one of the Eagles’ assistant coaches in 2023 that we know of so far. is the only one returning under new coordinators Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio.
István will meet many familiar faces in Cleveland.
Stefanski hired Duce Staley as running backs coach earlier this month, and Istvan and Staley were with the Eagles under coach Doug Pederson in 2019 and 2020. Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz was also here with Istvan. Browns general manager Andrew Berry also served as the Eagles’ vice president of football operations in 2019.
Istvan is the seventh assistant coach on Nick Sirianni’s 2023 staff and is known to no longer be with the team.
Offensive coordinator Brian Johnson is currently the passing game coordinator for the Commanders, defensive coordinators Sean Desai and Matt Patricia have left the organization but no other hires have been made, and quarterbacks coach Alex Tunney is under Shane Steichen. Colts passing game coordinator and senior offensive assistant Marcus Brady is now Chargers’ passing game coordinator. Coordinator Tracy Locker works under Titans defensive coordinator Denard Wilson, former Eagles secondary coach. He is the defensive line coach, and secondary coach DK McDonald is the co-defensive coordinator at the University of Kansas.
Assistants whose fates are still unknown include running backs coach Jemele Singleton, receivers coach Aaron Moorhead, tight ends coach Jason Michael, linebackers coach DJ Elliott, edge coach Jeremiah Washburn, and many more. This includes assistant position coaches and quality control coaches. .
During Istvan’s five years at Stoutland, the Eagles had four offensive linemen appear in a total of 11 Pro Bowls (Jason Kelce five, Lane Johnson three, Landon Dickerson two, Brandon Brooks once).
