Age has become a central issue in the November presidential election. President Joe Biden is 81 and in rapid cognitive decline, while Donald Trump is 78 and in good health. But with Trump’s choice of running mate, J.D. Vance, who is exactly half Trump’s age, millennials will finally have some senior representation.

Of course, as a Gen Xer myself, I can’t help but notice that our generation has been ignored again. Kamala Harris is several months past the traditional cutoff for Gen X, and to be honest, she seems more Baby Boomer than “I want MTV” generation. But despite the neglect of Gen X, it’s reassuring to know that there is a candidate who is young enough to understand the concerns of younger generations, yet old enough to have the experience necessary to get on the ballot.

While many still think of millennials as newcomers, the youngest members of this generation are approaching 30 and the oldest are in their early to mid-40s (depending on your definition). Millennials are the core of the workforce. They are dealing with economic and inflationary challenges, credit card, auto and student loan debt, and a difficult home buying environment.

For millennials, and even Gen X and older Gen Zers, having their voices heard and represented by someone less than twice their age who has lived through a similar situation and time to them, can be a refreshing and welcome change.

Moreover, the nomination of Vance signals that the future of the Republican Party does not rest solely on the party’s veteran members — a strategic move that signals that the party is thinking beyond 2028.

If Trump beats Biden, Vance would be running for president at age 44, even younger than his predecessor, Barack Obama, who was 47 when he took office.

With more than half the nation’s wealth held by the Baby Boomer generation, Social Security on the brink of bankruptcy, and the overall financial foundations of the U.S. generally weak, younger Americans are disheartened to watch people like Nancy Pelosi (84), Chuck Schumer (73), Mitch McConnell (82) and Biden make policy decisions they don’t need to accept. Even Kamala Harris, who turns 60 in October, is not seen as young enough to understand concerns about where the country is heading, whether decisions made today will cause chaos in the future, and what that means for younger Americans anxious about getting a hold of the American Dream.

Vance has a unique opportunity to blend wisdom with youth to lead the United States in a direction that creates power and opportunity, not just now but for the long term — an age factor that should be a plus when millennials vote in November.
