Charlotte, North Carolina (queen city news) — The Charlotte City Council could vote Monday to approve an amendment to the contract with the company that maintains the airport’s baggage handling system.
This item is on the meeting consent agenda and will add more than $1.7 million to the current contract with Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics, LLC.
If City Council members vote to approve the amendment, the total contract value would be $22,773,550.
In early July, Delta Airlines passengers told Queen City News that at the main photo shoot in baggage claim area A, stop working, leaving the bag stuck far behind the exposed belt. At the time, the belt was under construction.
The travelers said they didn’t receive much help from the baggage claim staff, so they took matters into their own hands and climbed onto the baggage chute and onto the exposed ceiling to retrieve their bags.
“Everyone was frustrated. Everyone was taking videos and people were clapping when they were unloading their luggage,” passenger Maggie Holmes told Queen City News at the time.
Airport officials have not commented on whether the July incident contributed to the decision to put more money into the contract with Siemens, but the proposed amendments would include more staffing to improve system capacity during peak operations. It specifies that an additional $471,233 will be added.
It will also extend the contract through January with additional funding for parts replacement and repairs “to enable continued maintenance and reliability of the baggage handling system.”
