Instagram creators Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger are back with a new project after four years out of the public eye.
With Krieger, Systrom launched Instagram in 2010 and sold it to Meta for $1 billion in 2012. His departure from Instagram in 2018 was reportedly due to disagreements with CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the future of the app and a desire to make it more like Facebook.
Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger announced Tuesday the release of Artifact, an app that uses AI to deliver a “personalized news feed.” The name of the app comes from his three pillars of the project: ‘articles’, ‘facts’ and ‘artificial intelligence’. Simply put, it’s an app that recommends stories to users, like TikTok.
Krieger said on Instagram that he and Systrom have spent more than a year “working with an amazing team” to bring the service to life. “As we expand, we are gradually accepting people,” Krieger said. On Tuesday, the public was able to join the waiting list.
Instead of focusing on pictures like Instagram, the main focus of this app is words.according to platformer, which first disclosed the launch, Artifact recommends content based on your interests and enables discussion with friends. While his primary feed showcases trending stories from major media outlets and small blogs, users’ feeds are increasingly customized based on their reading habits.
Artifact’s feature displays text instead of video and uses an algorithmic approach to content, even though it’s more concerned with what users love than who they follow. Much like the functionality of TikTok, another app that does
This is thanks to Google’s invention of Transformers in 2017, which allows computers to understand languages with fewer and fewer user cues. The Facebook model revealed what the user’s friends were interested in, then the Twitter model showed who the user followed.
Systrom said only high-quality publications from both sides of the political spectrum will be allowed on the app. Decide what to leave in.
This release is timed to coincide with the resurgence of interest in the social media space. While TikTok’s popularity has rocketed, many other apps, including Instagram, have copied some of its most popular features.
