What if you could make a clock that would last 10,000 years?
Is it a clock that only ticks once a year, chirps once every 100 years, and cuckoos once every 1000 years? A watch that symbolizes long-term thinking and reminds us of our responsibility for the future?
that is, Jeff Bezos’ Vision, founder of Amazon and the world’s richest retailer. He is investing his $42 million to build a monumental clock in the mountains of West Texas.
The watch was designed by computer scientist and inventor Danny Hillis and aims to be a marvel of engineering and a work of art.
Mechanism of the 10,000-year clock
of 10,000 year clock is a mechanical device that uses the earth’s thermal cycle to supply electricity. It consists of several components such as a solar synchronizer, a pendulum, a chime generator, and a series of gears and dials. The clock is 500 feet tall and spans the entire height of the mountain.

The clock synchronizes with the sun at noon every day and records the year, century, and millennium. It also features a chime generator that creates your own unique bell chime sequence with over 3.5 million bells and whistles, ensuring no two bells sound the same. The clock also has five room-sized memorial chambers for him, one for each anniversary of his 1st, 10th, 100th, 1,000th, and his 10,000th year. This room is a sealed space that stores artifacts related to time and messages regarding the future of humanity.
The first room will house a model of the solar system, and the remaining rooms will be left for future generations to fill.

Why Bezos is building a 10,000-year clock
Bezos is a long-term thinker and believes that humanity has a bright future. He is inspired by the vision of Danny Hillis, who in 1995 he conceived the idea of the 10,000 Year Clock as a way to foster long-term thinking and responsibility.
10,000 year clock challenge
Making a watch that lasts 10,000 years is no easy task. It requires careful engineering, meticulous craftsmanship, and rigorous testing. A watch must be able to withstand elements such as temperature changes, humidity, and dust. Clocks must be simple enough to be maintained by future generations, yet complex enough to be interesting and accurate.

How to get to the 10,000-year clock
Work on the clock continues, with no completion date set yet. Therefore, it is not yet available to the public. The watch is located in a remote location in the Sierra Diablo Mountains of West Texas, about 240 miles from the nearest airport. According to the foundation’s website, “To see The Clock, you must set out at dawn like any other pilgrimage. Reaching the gears inside requires a day’s hike.” Admission is free, but the number of visitors will be limited to protect the integrity and mystery of the clock.
Questions about watches
Some critics argue that watches are a waste of money and resources that could be better used to solve today’s pressing problems. Some question the wisdom of imposing man-made artifacts on natural landscapes. Some wonder if this watch actually stimulates long-term thinking, or whether it will be forgotten or ignored by future generations.
