I live in a city where too many government officials and citizens want to see me fail. When I first moved to Chicago over 25 years ago, I never thought I would be able to express these feelings.
My purpose in life has been to serve those who seek Jesus in their lives and to help young people escape a life of crime and poverty. You might think these are reasonable, common sense goals that anyone can achieve. But we live in highly ideological times, where sometimes everything seems upside down.
Those who want me to fail claim to be allies of black people, but their actions always result in the same song and dance that oppresses and victimizes black people.
The president of the Chicago Teachers Union blamed white supremacy for the inability of too many black children to read, write, and do math at grade level.

Faith is trust in something bigger than yourself. Faith is trust in one’s fellow man. In its purest essence, faith is good.
The people who want to see me fail believe in race. I believe in faith.

I believe that the people I serve are good souls. I believe that the young people who face temptation on the streets every day are good souls in need of opportunity. I believe that I am the bridge between my people and the better world they seek on earth and in heaven.
That’s why I’m not afraid of people who want to see me fail. Faith is light. Faith is hope. Faith is the strength to bounce back. Faith creates opportunity.

That’s why I never believed in the false god of race. God has shown me the power of faith many times. And I am more determined than ever to give strength to this faith for as long as God allows me to walk this earth.
There is no greater sin than betraying this faith.
